“Paddling Out” follows Nick, a twenty-two-year-old surfer from Ventura, California as he struggles to plan his future.
An accidental encounter with an old surfboard shaper named Woolly causes Nick to reconsider his goals. Woolly shares philosophy books on ethics causing Nick to reflect on his own decisions. Could focusing on virtue and good character be key to a happy life? He wants to make a change but can he summon the courage to stand up for himself against the wishes of his girlfriend and parents?
The story paints vivid descriptions of wave riding and behind-the-scenes glimpses into the techniques of surfboard craftsman while exploring central questions about happiness, religion, and death.
